ACCOMPLISHMENTS
PUBLIC SAFETY
- The City continues to have the lowest crime rate in all the surrounding cities.
- The City was determined to be the 38th Safest City in California by Safewise who uses the FBI crime data to report on the safety of all California Cities.
- Since 2017, the City has moved from the 75th safest city in California to the 38th safest city in the state in 2021.
- The part 1 and part 2 crimes have been significantly reduced in every tract in District 1 in La Mirada since 2017. (Foster Park, Gardenhill, and Biola tracts as well as in the entire city area)
- As Mayor, I was awarded a commendation by the Sheriff’s Dept TWICE during my tenure for placing Public Safety as a priority for the City. (2020 and 2025).
- Added additional sheriff's units (patrol and motor officers) to add to the safety of the City.
- New stop signs installed at the crosswalk of Biola/Gardenhill for the safety of Gardenhill school kids.
- Created Ring.com Rebate Program for public safety incentive.
- Created programs for license plate readers on major intersections for stolen vehicles, Amber Alerts, and major crimes incidents.
- Installed surveillance cameras as a force multiplierfor our Sheriff's dept. in various city parks.
- Working with local agencies on Anti-Street Racing Programs for alternatives to street racing.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
- The City has received the Award of Excellence by the Government Finance Officers Association for its financial practices for 30 consecutive years.
- The City was found to be in the top 6% of all financially sound cities in California by the California State Controller’s Office.
- The City was found to be in the top 8% of all financially stable cities in California by Senator John Moorlach’s report.
- The City La Mirada was ranked #11 by the State Auditor as one of California's most financially stable cities and received an S&P long-term rating of AA+, reflecting our strong commitment to responsible governance and fiscal discipline.
- The City does not assess any City or utility taxes.
- The City has passed balanced budgets every year.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT / BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
- The City has been AWARDED “Most Business Friendly City” TWICE by the LA County Economic Development Corp, including 2013, 2019, and nominated to top 5 in LA County in 2025).
- The City regularly performs a commercial center assessment review to ascertain the number of vacancies and any basis for the vacancies to assist and support the local businesses and restaurants.
- The City has an economic development team that regularly contacts businesses and restaurants to consider relocating into the City.
- Created and passed an Outdoor Dining Ordinance during Covid for our restaurants to operate successfully.
INFRASTRUCTURE
- The center median landscaping improvements and upgrades on La Mirada Blvd., Rosecrans, Valley View, and Alondra Blvd., have been completed in the past 7 years.
- Splash! Aquatic Center has added a new six-lane mat rider slide attraction, solar heaters, upgraded infrastructure and has been breaking records for attendance each year.
- The Waterfall/Fountain/Geysers at the Civic Center has been completed which revives the Civic center beauty and innovation for community use.
- ALL residential streets have been resurfaced along with new / refurbished sidewalks and curb repairs, ADA access, pavement markings, etc.
- The City won the Energy Action Award for approved energy efficient upgrades of all city facilities including solar panel parking covers in the parking lots at the civic center, electric charging stations at the civic center, solar heaters for Splash, and LED upgrades for all city facilities in 2022.
- Every street lightin the City has been upgraded to high efficiency brighter LED lighting.
- A new Comedy Club / Jazz Lounge / Cabaret is being constructed at the La Mirada Theatre upper floor for more entertainment for residents.
- A new Patio Dining Cafe has been added to the La Mirada Theatre for use by the community adding a new venue for jazz, music and other entertainment.
- New playground equipment has been added to every park in the City (with equipment) along with new sport court resurfacing.
- New right-turn Lanes have been added to the intersections at LM Blvd./Imperial Highway and Telegraph/Imperial Highway to improve traffic flow.
- New right-turn lanes will be added to Southbound Valley View at Alondra Blvd. and Valley View at Rosecrans Avenue to improve traffic flow.
- New Traffic signal upgrades have been added to most major streets to improve safety and traffic flow in the city.
- New Traffic Signal Approved at Burgess Street and Imperial Highway in Gardenhill area.
- New Traffic signal installation approved at Telegraph / Wicker (Walmart Grocery) for safety and traffic flow.
- A block wallrepair / replacement low interest loan program.
- Creek Park Master Plan is approved for major upgrades to the park, bridges, walking track, outcrops, etc with a new vehicle bridge and surveillance cameras added for safety.
- La Mirada History Tour Sign Posts and Updates + walking and bicycle map.
- Traffic BoxArt Contestfor painting La Mirada History on local traffic boxes.
- Marquardt Avenue side median landscaping project in the works.
OTHER AREAS
- The My La Mirada App-for use by the residents for easy access to City Services and notifications.
- New weekly Farmers Market began in March, 2022.
- Farmers Markets were added to the Summer Concerts.
- Community Gardens added to Frontier Park in Spring, 2022.
- Instituted Community grants for residents, businesses and restaurants for Covid relief.
- Passed Small Business / Restaurant Relief Program for local businesses
- Created and passed Resident Mortgage / Rental Relief Program for the residents.
- Restaurant Incentive Program for attraction of new restaurants to the City.
- Created and Passed a Vacant Commercial Property Ordinance for commercial owners to register with the City if the Property is not rented or sold in one year. This has led to the redevelopment of blighted buildings in the community. (National Lumber / Grand Cafe, etc.) Dutch Bros, the old car wash is now developed into new restaurants, etc.
- Developing a new ordinance to attract new industries to our City.
- Drive-Thru Holiday Events for the Kids During Covid 2020 (Easter, Halloween, Christmas)
- Senior Care Package Program through Grocery Outlet for seniors in the community.
